Ok I will be posting a few things since I have so many pictures to catch up on. We have been having TONS of fun the last few weeks. :)
We started Letter R week watching the short fable of "The Little Red Hen"
We talked about the importance of helping out if you want to enjoy the prize at the end. Afterwards we read this cute book that had a little different twist on the story. I loved it because instead of bread the Little Red Hen is making a pizza. At the end she decides to share her pizza while the other animals get to do all the cleanup. :) That is how we run things at our house as well.
We also have been working lots on rhyming words. We made a list of lots of words that rhyme with hen.
They got to make their own hen and glued on some eggs that they got to write down some of our rhyming words we had made. It is hard to see the beginning letter on this one because it was done in pink crayon.
Then we got to enjoy a yummy treat and made our own pizzas.
We also learned all about rain. I like to teach them about the water cycle when we learn about rain. They decorated their letter R's with cotton balls and raindrops. Some even put rainbows and lightning.
This is a great non-fiction book I like to use that has really neat pictures of lightning.
This is also one of my favorite books. The farmer tells the dog to get all the animals in the barn because a storm is coming. The animals think storm is a monster so they are all scared. In the end the farmer lets them out and they all enjoy the rain and are grateful that storm never came. :)
For science they got to make their own rain. I put water in some mason jars and then shaving cream for their clouds. The water represents the air. They then took medicine droppers and filled them with colored water. They watched as the rain slowly started dropping from the clouds.
I found a new site that I just LOVE! It is called teacherspayteachers.com I really like it because it has all sorts of great things you can buy and download for your class. And the best part is that when I buy something the money goes to another teacher. That is always a great thing! :) Anyways, I found some great stuff to help with learning our letters better and practice our handwriting even more. This little guy was doing such a great job, I had to take a picture of him.
We had lots of fun talking about rockets on one day. We started by reading some fun books about rockets.
This one is actually about a car that a little boy dreams of building that would be a rocket.
I always love books that are similar to "There was an old lady who swallowed a fly"
We made rockets out of our names and they had to write how many blocks tall their rocket was.
I then found this fantastic site that showed me how to make rockets out of paper cups and rubber bands. I made them the night before and then they colored a picture of a rocket to put on them. We had fun counting down from 10 and then letting them BLAST OFF! Here is the site if you are interested in making them at home. We played with them for hours until the rubber bands eventually broke.
How to make your own rocket!
On rainbow day we discussed how rainbows are made. We had fun doing the experiment with water and flashlight to see a rainbow appear on a piece of white paper. Afterwards I taught them the song, "I can sing a rainbow" to help them learn the colors of their rainbow. I have changed the order though of the colors because I wanted them to learn the correct order. It goes like this:
Red and orange and then there's yellow.
Green and blue and purple.
I can sing a rainbow, sing a rainbow, sing a rainbow too.
It seems to have stuck as my little girl sings this song all the time when she wants to color a rainbow.
We practiced putting fruit loops on our rainbows in the right order and then they got to eat them.
Afterwards we made some fun rainbow art.
I will be posting more about our field trip, Dr. Suess Day and of course the fun we had with St. Patrick's Day this week in a little bit.
I am just having so much fun with this class! I was just telling my husband this week that I am so proud of all the hard work they have been doing and that they are so good at always following directions and are so kind to each other. Thank you for all your support. :)
