Happy New Year!

We have started off 2017 at a great start. We loved going to Harmon's grocery store for our field trip and have been doing lots of fun units to go along with Arctic Animals. Mrs. Chelise even came this month to do some Arctic Yoga.

P is for Penguins! We made a penguin craft out of the letter P. The kids learned about the importance of daddy penguins and how they take care of the egg and baby while the mommy goes hunting for fish. The kids loved taking turns pretending to take care of their own egg and I loved watching how adorable they looked waddling around like a penguin. For snack time we worked on one to one correspondence and the kids put fishes on each penguin based off the number on their belly. For centers this day they did a shape search, penguin counting felt game, Penguin matching number game and a sensory bin with snow, icebergs, water beads and penguins. This was their favorite.

For polar bear day we measured arctic animals with bears,  read the book, Polar Bear Polar Bear what do you Hear? We played our own listening game to test our sense of hearing. The kids made polar bear hats and we learned about their blubber that keeps them warm with a science experiment. We also played an ABC game with letters and fish to see which polar bear got the most fish. For snack time we made a polar bear out of an oreo, bananas and chocolate chips.

Iceberg Day

On this day we learned about all different animals in the arctic and made an igloo and iceberg with some of them on it. We melted icebergs with blue water. They would roll a die to see how many drops of water they got to put on it and when they finished there was a surprise waiting for them in the iceberg. We practiced hopping from one iceberg to the  next while chanting different letters and at the end had a little iceberg treat.

Number center Day

The kids put numbers in numerical order to feed the shark fish. They threw bean bags at numbers that their partner said, they played an adding game with our addition  machine, matched domino numbers to make a train track and stamped numbers onto the letter N.

We have also been working on some Nursery Rhymes this month. They loved Hickory Dickory Dock. We worked on rhyming with words with other numbers on the clock to make up a new story and played with our parachute to fly bean bags into the air. They made their own clock with hands and added a mouse. We worked on finding different letters in the rhyme and circling them on a big poster. We also did this for Star Light Star Bright. They made their own constellations with this poem and we put numbered stars in order from 1-20. We talked about wishes and what they would wish on a star for as well.

Q is for Quarters, queen and Q-tips. This day we learned about things that are quiet vs. loud. We played a fun game with index cards that had their ABC on it. Anytime they saw the letter Q they could quack. The other letters we would just say what they were and the sound they make. We played a quiet hiding game and painted with Q tips.

Back in December......

So sorry I didn't post these earlier. We enjoyed reading the story The Mitten. They loved playing a retelling game with our parachute. They each got to be an animal and hide under the parachute when I called their animal out. We worked on centers made snowflake patters, a felt mitten game, number snow bingo and a craft. We also made our own book and practiced pointing to words with our snowflake pointers.

We also learned about hibernation this month. They loved learning about animals that hibernate and we made our own bag of food that we had gathered to get plump for winter. I would tell them it was Fall and they would start eating and finding a place to hibernate. They would sleep through the winter when I turned the lights off and then when they came on it would be spring and they could start eating again. For centers we wrote letters in shaving cream, made animal tracks in play dough, traced our numbers and made a hibernation craft.

We had a candy cane day and Polar Express Day where we worked on letter J  and worked on patterns. We made reindeer hats and some fun games for polar express day. We also worked on making parent gifts which they were so excited to make.

We had a snowman day and we made a snowman with items to go with our 5 senses. (Candy Cane mouth, cinnamon nose, sandpaper arms, bell ears and google eyes)

We made snow this day with Insta Snow. This stuff is amazing! I got it at hobby lobby in the science section. The kids loved practicing their letters in snow.

Our Christmas party was great. We played pin the nose on frosty, Santa santa elf, played guess what's hiding in the stocking, who is hiding in the Christmas box and made Christmas Tree snacks. We also opened gifts from each other and had a snowball fight with mini little pillows.
