In March we started off the month with reading a book to learn the saying "In Like a lion, out like a lamb". We worked on weather the entire month and charted what it was like outside each day. For science the kids learned about the water cycle and how rain is formed. We did an experiment with boiling water to watch how clouds form. We also made a water cycle wind sock and had a rainy day obstacle course with jumping on puddles, climbing under a rainbow, and touching the clouds.
Sorry some of these pictures didn't turn out as well
Dr. Suess day was also in March. We read lots of his books. Worked on a number coloring page to make a birthday cake. Practiced our rhyming words with an envelope game. We made cat in the hat hats with rhyming words on it. For math we sorted different colored fish and we finished the day off with green eggs and ham for a treat.
For letter X we had an X ray day. I have real X-rays of bones as well as animals bones. The kids loved matching the animal with the correct x ray. We practiced playing the notes on a xylophone. For movement we made X movements with our body. (jumping jacks, scissors, etc) We also made paper dolls with an x ray underneath them. For a snack I made breadsticks that looked like a letter x.
We had a Police Officer day to get ready for our filed trip to the Police Station. We read the book "Officer Buckle and Gloria" the kids also loved the fun animation of the book from Scholastic. We took fingerprints like the policeman do. We played a game called Who is Lost? One person would be the police officer and one would go hide. The rest of the kids would yell "Police man, Police man my child is lost!" And then the police man would come look to see who was missing. They loved using a magnifying glass to look for clues. We also made Letter P hats and badges to look more like a policeman. We enjoyed our field trip to the police station as well. And really loved meeting the K9 dog and hearing the sirens on the car.
Movement game: The police man would tell us when to stop and when to go.
Sorry I didn't get any photos with my other class.
St Patrick's Day was of course a favorite! The kids loved seeing all the silly tricks the leprechaun played in our classroom. We matched letters of Shamrocks. Made rainbows with a pot of gold. Learned the order of a rainbow. Sorted Lucky Charm marshmallows. We played a game to find the lucky shamrock and enjoyed finding the clues the leprechaun left to find his gold. At the end of the day we got hats and mustaches which were lots of fun.
For Easter we learned about the life cycle of a chicken. We played a game to see what animals and insects come from eggs. They got to act out each one. We also played a number game to see which egg the baby chick was hiding in. We enjoyed lots of Easter songs and an Egg hunt at the end of the day.
In April we have been learning about plants. We added each step of the plant cycle to our word wall. We made a picture with the 4 things plants need to live on each leaf. We also enjoyed planting our own seeds.
Mixing paints is the best!
Bugs! We love bugs! The kids loved getting our caterpillars and ladybugs. We learned all about the different life cycles and made a picture out of pasta noodles to remind us the life cycle of a butterfly. We read the book The Hungry Caterpillar and made some butterflies at snack time. We acted out the life cycle and also looked at pictures to look for a camouflaged caterpillar. We ended the day with some caterpillars I made for the kids. For Ladybug day we squashed different bugs with letters on them with our painted fingers. We learned all about the different bugs ladybugs eat. We read the book The Grouchy Ladybug and worked with clocks to practice our numbers. We also made a ladybug with different feelings we feel.
We enjoyed a couple field trips this month to the Spaghetti Factory and Texas Roadhouse. We loved getting a tour of the kitchens and having a yummy treat at both.
Letter Z day! We learned about zebras. We had zebra math centers where we rolled a zebra, practiced writing our numbers and matched numbers with manipulatives. We also made zebras out of black paper and dipped q tips into bleach to make the stripes.
Rock Day was lots of fun. The kids loved bringing their own rocks. We learned about Sedimentary, Igneous and Metamorphic rocks in fun ways. :) We also did different stations to do some experiments on rocks. The kids loved checking to see if their rocks were magnetic, how long the were, what colors were in their rocks by rubbing them on tiles, taking tiny rocks to make a letter R, coloring their rocks with chalk, checking with vinegar to see if their rocks had limestone and last cleaning their rocks and seeing if they sink or float. It was a messy day but lots of fun.
For shape day we reviewed our shapes by playing a cookie game that they have to use their sense of touch to feel for how many sides are on each cookie shape. We went on a shape hunt through our classroom singing a song. We had different shaped snacks for snack time and read the book The book of Shapes. The kids then got to pick a shape and turn it into something just like the book did. We had some really creative ideas.
We continue to work during center time on sounds of our alphabet, rhyming words, letters, and numbers always in fun ways through play. The kids don't even know they are learning sometimes.
They love to help each other and are great friends.
And they love being creative and making their own things up to go along with what I give them.
I sure love these cuties! Thank you for sharing them with me. It is super late now so I better get to bed so I am ready to go for letters SH or our Shark Day. :)
