Valentine's Day and Dental Health Week

Just a few of the things we did during Valentine's week:

We measured things in our classroom with conversation hearts and practiced writing our numbers.

We made animals and valentine's out of hearts.

Valentine Party: We decorated cookies, played spin the bottle (They had to say something nice about whoever the bottle landed on), played bingo, and hid a valentine lion and had to find him.

 Passing out Valentine's.

For Dental Health Week:

We Brushed our teeth on paper with white paint and then added some sparkles.

Some of the books we read:
I love this one because it talks about how the Tooth Fairy can only take sparkly clean teeth.

This Dora book explains everything that happens at the dentist. The kids loved telling me about their visit to see the dentist.

We counted 20 baby teeth in their mouths and then they got to make their own mouth with teeth out of marshmallows.

We even practiced brushing and flossing our teeth.

We also ate an oreo and then looked at our teeth to see how dirty they were. After the oreo we then ate an apple and watched how the apple cleaned all the oreos off. We then discussed eating healthy food to keep our teeth from getting cavities.

Next we put hard boiled eggs in different liquids. We put them in milk, tea, soda, grape juice and vinegar. The vinegar represented all the plaque we get on our teeth when we don't brush well. We left them in for 2 days.

Then pulled them out.
This was the one in soda. It was very brown and when we tried to brush it, it didn't clean off very well.

Grape Juice, stained and also hard to get clean. We talked about not wanting our teeth to turn purple or brown.

Tea: This one cleaned off really well.

Vinegar (Plaque): This one was definitely the grossest. It no longer had a hard shell and was soft and bloated. We discussed how not brushing eats holes into our teeth and causes cavities. It also makes it so our teeth won't be as strong.

The Milk Egg was nice and white and hard. But one little guy squeezed a little too hard and it broke open. So I guess even if we don't brush when we drink milk, it can still make our teeth a little weak. :)

We had a visitor come talk to us about healthy foods. Amy from SuperHealthyKids came to see us. She played a game with the kids and let us try some new foods.

We colored our plates with healthy food choices from different food groups.

She even sent each kid home with a fun plate and bowl to remember all the food groups to eat. Thanks Amy! You can check out more about her and try some of her yummy and healthy meals at superhealthykids.com

Super Healthy Kids

We had a great visit from Amy from Super Healthy Kids. She has a great website with some great ideas for cooking and eating healthy. She read "Gregory the Horrible Eater" to the kids and talked about healthy and not healthy things we eat. They got to play a fun game of throwing a dice and matching a fruit or veggie to the color it landed on. We also sang a song to go with each fruit or veggie that was chosen. It was pretty funny at the end when the kids were so excited to play with her pretend food. I think I will need to get some for next year. :)

Thankful Tree and The Food Pyramid

Today was a fun day even though I was sad that two of our students were absent today. We made a thankful tree and put leaves that were covered in glitter and stickers of some of our favorite things. Included in this list was: The sun, My Toys, My Family, My mommy, Trains, My Friends and my little pony with the purple comb. :) Kids are so cute! We also learned about the 6 food groups and made a giant food pyramid. We then put all the food from my bags into their correct category. I think the kids were a little sad when we talked about not eating a lot from the sweets, fats, and oils group.
